Curriculum

We follow the curriculum as set out in the Curriculum Framework for Children aged between 3 and 5 years. We provide a varied and stimulating range of activities across the five key aspects of children's development and learning.

Emotional, Personal and Social Development is inherent in all our activities and is ongoing. Each child is given a lot of attention - they are praised for effort and are complimented when they show kindness to others and when they 'give a turn'. Praise is also given for tidying away when they are finished. They are warmly welcomed on arrival and the children hear staff tell the parent something positive about their work before they leave to go home each day. They are encouraged to respect others and their property.

Communication and Language has a high profile in our group. Play leaders speak Gaelic and make every effort through body language, actions, mime, pictures, songs, rhymes, play, fun and games to give all children a basic knowledge and interest in the language. Some of the children speak English as their parent tongue and we recognise the children's need to communicate. They are encouraged to share, to question and to express opinions and emotions in their own language.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World is an important aspect of a young child’s development. A range of opportunities is provided for children to learn about the natural environment and people at work. We also develop their skills of observation and investigation. During play activities children are given opportunities to develop their mathematical skills.

Expressive and Aesthetic Development. We provide a range of materials to enable children to experiment with and discover different ways of using them. They experience pleasure and satisfaction and are able to express ideas and emotions through art, craft, song, dance and role play.

Physical Development and Movement is an important part of our curriculum. Children's co-ordination and hand control is developed through a range of suitable resources. The children take part in energetic play on a daily basis within the games hall and the outside garden. They also have the opportunity to participate in playtime activities with the primary school pupils.
